Although there are a lot of unknowns with regard to COVID-19, we’ve gained a substantial amount of knowledge since the pandemic started. A large, community-based practice found that less than 1% of their asymptomatic endoscopy patients tested positive for COVID-19 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). That result is somewhat reassuring, but the same study, highlighted below, also reported that positivity rates on PCR tests did not necessarily correlate with symptoms of infection. In light of the increasing prevalence of COVID-19, it’s critical to perform PCR testing 72 hours prior to procedures to assist with patient triage.
