One-third of pediatric gastroenterologists are experiencing professional burnout, according to the results of a new survey published by authors from the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) task force investigating burnout in the field.
The 35-item survey was sent to 1,791 NASPGHAN members, 408 (22.7%) of whom returned the survey. A total of 28.8% reported being at high risk for emotional exhaustion, 17.5% reported high risk for depersonalization, and 33% reported overall burnout. Younger pediatric gastroenterologists appeared to be at particular risk for burnout, with survey respondents who were 44 years of age or younger reporting significantly more burnout than their older counterparts (P=0.018).
