Last fall, the American Gastroenterological Association convened a multidisciplinary conference in Bethesda, Md., titled “The Future of AI in Gastroenterology.” The conference reflected the increasing role that artificial intelligence has started to play in gastroenterology and hepatology, and the increasing recognition that leaders in the field will need to collectively address systemic barriers and biases and provide broad education to the GI community to foster responsible AI adoption.
Below are a few key takeaways from the conference.
Most of the sessions covered during the conference, and most of the literature on AI in GI, are related to endoscopy and computer vision, but AI applications can go way beyond this to address multiple problems across GI and hepatology. These issues can range from precision health to risk prediction to digital biomarkers, enrollment in clinical trials through matching eligible patients, automating physician notes, and other efficiencies for GI practices and endoscopy centers.
