Since its introduction into clinical use in 2001, capsule endoscopy has been a game changer, enabling gastroenterologists to noninvasively image the entire small bowel.1 On the 20th anniversary of capsule endoscopy in clinical practice, it is important to look back at its beginnings, clinical success, and extension into the upper gastrointestinal tract and colon, as well as peer into the future, with the release of new types of capsules and the integration of artificial intelligence into this revolutionary technology.
