AI-assisted colonoscopy has shown promise in enhancing adenoma detection rates, but it also significantly increases the removal of benign, non-adenomatous lesions without adenoma removal, according to findings presented at the ACG 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting. In a study comparing 599 AI-assisted colonoscopies to 441 unassisted ones, 12.4% of AI-assisted procedures led to the removal of only benign lesions, compared to 8.4% in unassisted procedures (P = .04). Common benign lesions included benign colonic mucosa, lymphoid aggregates, and hyperplastic polyps.
