VIOVOC has received U.S. Patent No. 12,761,175 for technology designed to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in bathroom air and translate these signals into personalized dietary guidance. The company’s ambient sensor is designed to passively monitor compounds associated with gut microbial activity without requiring stool samples, test kits, or food diaries.
The device uses a metal oxide sensor to detect changes in electrical resistance caused by VOCs in ambient air. Measurements are transmitted wirelessly to a server and compared with an individual’s personalized baseline to generate dietary recommendations. The system powers VIOVOC’s Virtual Fiber Coach, which uses a proprietary V-Factor score and V-Zone target range to recommend fermentable fiber-rich foods tailored to the user.
The company says its technology is based on the relationship between gut bacteria, dietary fiber fermentation, and the production of short-chain fatty acids and other volatile compounds. VIOVOC plans to make the platform available in select U.S. practices.
Why it matters: Ambient sensing could offer a convenient approach to monitoring signals associated with gut microbial activity and supporting personalized nutrition. However, the announcement describes patented technology and company-developed recommendations; it does not provide clinical validation demonstrating that the sensor accurately characterizes the microbiome or improves health outcomes.
