A new document from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) highlights the continued underrepresentation of women in gastroenterology and academic medicine.
In 2016, only 16.4% of practicing gastroenterologists in the U.S. were women, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). By 2021, that number had increased slightly to 19.7%. Encouragingly, 38% of first-year GI fellows were women in 2022–2023, suggesting that the pipeline of female gastroenterologists is growing.
