The night before a controversial UnitedHealthcare policy requiring preauthorization for most endoscopic procedures was to go into effect, the insurance company announced that it would not implement the policy but would ask gastroenterology practices to participate in an advance notification program starting June 1.
According to a statement from the insurer, the new program is intended “to provide an opportunity for physician education and to allow us to collect more data on which physicians should be eligible for our previously announced 2024 gold card program.” The statement further noted that there will be no denial of care related to advance notification.
