The article discusses a novel laser-based virtual scale endoscope that shows promise in addressing the challenge of accurately measuring polyps during colonoscopies. In a simulated study, the virtual tool outperformed biopsy forceps and endoscopic rulers in estimating polyp size.
Current methods of polyp measurement often rely on visual estimates by comparing polyps to the known size of biopsy forceps. Alternatively, endoscopic rulers are used, but they can be cumbersome and potentially increase the duration of colonoscopies. The virtual-scale endoscope was developed as a solution to these limitations, allowing for the instantaneous superimposition of a virtual scale at the push of a button.
