Olympus announced the launch of its EndoClot offerings for use in gastrointestinal (GI) procedures in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. The EndoClot portfolio supports hemostasis and lifting in endoscopic submucosal dissection or resection in GI procedures. Olympus launched the EndoClot adhesive, the EndoClot polysaccharide hemostatic spray and the EndoClot submucosal injection solution. EndoClot Plus developed the portfolio of GI solutions. The company expanded its distribution agreement with Olympus from the U.S. to EMEA in December 2022.

Months of high-level discussions regarding reforming Medicare physician payment has culminated in physician lawmakers introducing bipartisan legislation advancing the first leg of the AMA’s three-part strategy for fixing the broken system. The “Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act,” H.R. 2474, would provide automatic updates to physician Medicare payment rates and link them to inflation. The bill was introduced by California Democratic Reps. Raul Ruiz, MD, and Ami Bera, MD, along with Republicans Larry Bucshon, MD, of Indiana, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD, of Iowa.

Bushra Sulieman, MD, a practicing gastroenterologist at Mercy Iowa City’s Gastroenterology Clinic, was stabbed to death in Sudan, according to an April 27 report from ABC affiliate KCRG. Dr. Sulieman lived in Sudan but frequently traveled to Mercy Iowa City (Iowa) to perform surgeries. He has been a physician at the hospital since February 2021. He was reportedly killed during ongoing violence in the African country while taking his father to dialysis.

Two types of bariatric-metabolic surgery were more effective than lifestyle modification plus best medical care in the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a randomized trial from Italy showed. In over 200 patients with obesity and biopsy-confirmed NASH who completed the study, the primary endpoint of histological resolution of NASH (without worsening of fibrosis) was met by 56% of patients assigned to Roux-en-Y and 57% of those randomized to sleeve gastrectomy, as compared with only 16% of participants who underwent lifestyle modification, reported Geltrude Mingrone, MD, PhD, of King’s College London, and colleagues.
