CMS announced last month that physicians participating in the Quality Payment Program’s (QPP) Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) can apply for a reprieve on data reporting and for other flexibilities for the 2020 performance period. The MIPS automatic extreme and uncontrollable circumstances (EUC) policy applies to all individual MIPS-eligible clinicians for the 2020 performance year. MIPS-eligible clinicians reporting as individuals will be scored only on performance categories for which they submitted data, with all other categories reweighted to 0% of their final score. PE GI Solutions and North Bergen, N.J.-based Ambulatory Center for Endoscopy acquired Hudson Bergen Medical Center, ACE’s second location, which has been renamed Hudson Bergen Endoscopy and Surgical Center. The acquisition of Hudson Bergen was spearheaded by six physician partners of ACE’s first location, according to a March 24 release. The second location accommodates patients needing gastroenterology or general surgical procedures. The partnering physicians of the Hudson Bergen Endoscopy and Surgical Center are expected to perform over 4,000 procedures annually.
Memphis, Tenn.-based One GI has acquired Dayton (Ohio) Gastroenterology, the second- largest independent GI practice in the state, the Dayton Business Journal reported March 24. Six notes: 1. One GI, backed by up to $80 million in capital through Webster Equity Partners, is a gastroenterology management services organization with practices in Tennessee, Mississippi and Ohio. 2. The acquisition will build economies of scale to help Dayton Gastroenterology expand its presence, “potentially across state lines,” according to Jonathan Saxe, MD, the practice’s president. The practice aims to partner with independent groups with up to eight physicians.

Female representation in the gastroenterology workforce increased from 11·0% in 2007 to 18·9% in 2019, 1 but the proportion of women in senior academic and leadership positions remains much lower than that of men. 2 Such disproportion occurs despite similar academic productivity between genders. 3 The Comment by Manmeet Matharoo and colleagues 4 in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology reiterated the need to sponsor and enhance female representation in academic meetings. Although not explicitly alluded to by the authors, academic grand rounds are another forum wherein female academics, particularly junior women, can benefit from speakership opportunities.
